The building is a single development consisting of two office towers of 28 storeys each; with a 7-storey podium and 3 basements of shopping and carpark. The project is owned by Ngee Ann Development who started the project in 1989 and finished constructing the building in 1993.
The building is to provide work, recreational and shopping spaces for people. A civic space able to house 4000 people fronts the building in the form of a forecourt. This is also used for concerts, exhibitions and festivals.
The project is built in concrete and totally faced with granite as a finish. It is one of the few buildings that use granite innovatively. Granite is used as a finish as well as a formwork for the construction of the external cladding. Basically there are 3 main types of red granite: African Red, Imperial Red and Autumn Pink.
Because the building is of an immense size; the colours are carefully selected to provide a texture that helps to reduce the size of the building visually. Part of the building is built as pre-cast walls whilst the podium is cladded with granite in-situ. The pre-cast part is the 28 floors of twin towers which is constructed of 3.8m by 3.2m granite pre-finished concrete wall panels. In conclusion it is a brave attempt to create a powerful statement using granite as a finish for such a huge building.
